Telles qu'elles project
Our evening of public events, which were held on November 4, 2006, at the Maison culturelle et communautaire de Montréal-Nord, was the grand finale of Telles qu’elles. These events included a show with an autobiographical theme based on the various experiences of women with disabilities and an exhibition where we displayed all the works of art produced during our artistic projects. We wanted our public events to present the outcomes and achievements of the learning process and, even more, to lead to an awareness of the barriers that these women face.
Through everyday objects (clothes, perfume bottles, photos, books), we presented themes and clusters of time and space centered on participants works of art. These clusters echoed our experiences as women with disabilities and our lives filled with challenges, desires, and accomplishments. We did not want these everyday objects to hide the works of art or to drown them in a flow of messages. By presenting a deliberately surprising montage of superimposed objects (for instance, prosthetic legs on a pair of skis), we wanted to create evocative and poetic phrases to break taboos and dispel preconceived ideas. We displayed the works of art in an environment that provided the public with opportunities to form their own perception of these visual presentations.
