Committees

Employment - Incomes


In matters of employment and social assistance AFHM is interested in all aspects concerning women with disabilities:

  • Identifying socio economic needs
  • Training and  information and professional support
  • Adaptation of the work place
  • The accessibility of day care centers 
  • Flexible work schedules
  • Programs for equality access
  • Employment equity programs
  • Social assistance programs
  • Sensitization of employment centers, governments, employers and trade unions to our issues
  • Creating networking & solidarity with other groups of women and people with disabilities.

Violence - Survival

In matters of violence and survival, AFHM:

  • Conducts research on issues of violence as experienced by women and women with disabilities in particular
  • Publicizes research findings, to inform women with disabilities and the public in general.
  • Advocates to ensure that resources available to women victims of violence are made accessible to all women with disabilities.
  • Gives women with disabilities the means to counteract violence by offering self-defense courses and publishing information on all types of violence.
  • Continues to demand that public and para public services, as well as those which receive subsidies, be accessible to women with disabilities.

Health

  • With regards to health, AFHM:
  • Conducts research on the health of women with disabilities.
  • Publicizes research findings, to inform women with disabilities and the public in general.
  • Asserts the right to information on gynecological health, motherhood, sterilization and the most suitable method of contraception by determining the most effective and appropriate way to meet the individual woman’s needs.
  • Continues to demand that health services be accessible to women with disabilities.

Sexuality

In regards to sexuality, AFHM wants to explore areas of love and sexuality as lived by women with disabilities. To this end, a committee was formed in order to present workshops to discuss and reflect on various topics such as:

  • body image and self esteem
  • desire and  pleasure
  • motherhood
  • lesbianism
  • partnership

These workshops aim to develop solidarity among women with disabilities by sharing their experiences. Also promote a more positive image of ourselves; reflect this image to the public and present information to the public on sexuality and women with disabilities. 

Mothers

In regards to motherhood, AHFM wishes to identify and bring solutions to the various problems faced by women with disabilities who want to give birth to or adopt children.

Among these issues are:

  • Schools
  • Transportation
  • Pediatric clinics or other medical clinics
  • Various recreational events

We want to:

  • Support and encourage women with disabilities who wish to give birth to or adopt children
  • Create positive images about mothers with disabilities
  • Offer information to future mothers with disabilities 
  • Sensitize governmental authorities and medical community to the fact that the disabled women can have children like all women.

Committees to come: Multi-cultural

In matters of multi-cultural communities, AHFM wishes to identify and find solutions for various problems confronted by women with disabilities of these communities who are living  a combined discrimination caused by prejudices due to ethnic origin, racialiazation, immigration or refuge status.

We want to:

  • Conduct research in order to document the problems which the women with disabilities of cultural communities are confronted.
  • Offer information sessions.
  • Sensitize governmental authorities and the public to the realities lived by women with disabilities of different cultural communities.
